Jeff joins Clarus after 15 years with NewStar Financial in a variety of capacities within its leveraged finance group. Most recently Jeff served as a Senior Portfolio Manager and Head of the Analyst & Associate Pool.
In his portfolio management role, Jeff provided underwriting oversight and risk management on new transactions while managing a dynamic portfolio of sponsor-backed middle market credits with hold positions ranging from $10M to $50M across a spectrum of senior, unitranche and junior debt positions.
As Head of the NewStar’s Analyst & Associate Pool, Jeff had the rewarding opportunity of overseeing the recruitment, training, management and development of dozens of successful young leveraged finance bankers.
Prior to those duties, Jeff was part of NewStar's originations group, responsible for sourcing and underwriting middle market leverage finance transactions across a variety of sectors including telecommunications, technology and business services.
Before his NewStar Financial experience, Jeff pursued a lifelong passion completing several seasons as a commercial tuna fisherman targeting giant Atlantic bluefin tuna off of New England waters.
After earning a Finance degree at Bentley University in Waltham, MA, Jeff began his banking career with a decade long stint with a rapidly growing Fleet Financial Group, in a business unit that was led by Tim Conway. After completing Fleet's Commercial Credit management training program, he ultimately served as a Relationship Manager working with middle market media, communications and technology entrepreneurs and sponsors within a highly profitable and dynamic multi-billion dollar portfolio.
Jeff contributes his versatility, outstanding credit track record and decades of experience with sponsor-backed middle market companies to Clarus’ underwriting and risk management strategy. He is responsible for establishing and maintaining all underwriting and portfolio management processes and guidelines as well as recruiting and developing the expansion of the credit team as the organization scales. Jeff works closely with originations and portfolio teams, executive leadership, capital partners and the Board of Directors, and will sit on Clarus’ Management Committee, Investment Committee and Funding Committee.
Away from work, Jeff enjoys time with his family and friends on Cape Cod, particularly sharing his passion for boating and saltwater fishing; and an occasional round of golf when time permits. Jeff and his wife, Jill, are the proud parents of a daughter and son.
